R.O’Sullivans’ Irish Pub & Steakhouse, 811 E Grand Ave, Escondido. Ph: 760-737-0954
No trip to Ireland is complete without visiting a good Irish pub, but save your plane tickets, because Irish eyes are smiling in this Escondido neighborhood.
The heritage of owners Ned and Brenda Giblin is reflected throughout their Old World-style pub.

The atmosphere is warm and hospitable, with sounds of happy guests chatting, laughing and devouring traditional Irish fare, including Corned Beef and Cabbage and Shepherd's Pie – ground beef, carrots, peas and onions in gravy, topped with mashed potatoes and served with sautéed vegetables.

Continental Delicatessen120 S Kalmia St. Escondido. Ph: (760) 745-8007
Continental Deli, one of the oldest operating businesses in Escondido, serves up good down-home food. A big refrigerated case is filled with Boar's Head Meats, authentic German and Italian cold cuts, and aged cheeses. The bratwurst with homemade sauerkraut is the real thing, served with German mustard and French bread. Griffin, who is of Italian and Irish decent, makes his own lasagna from scratch – "even the ricotta cheese."

A must-have is the Tuscan Salad with hearts of palm, artichoke hearts, zucchini, dried cranberries, garbanzo beans, dry-roasted almonds, sun-dried tomato and pepperoncinis, tossed with mixed greens in a white balsamic citrus vinaigrette. Top it with grilled chicken or Breseola, Italian seasoned dried beef. Open Monday-Saturday, closed Sunday.  Visit Continental Delicatessen

Remy's on Grand  113 E. Grand Ave, Escondido. Ph: (760) 747-1328
Remy's serves French and Italian dishes with a simple elegance that is warm and welcoming. There's seating on a bright and airy patio or in a candlelit dining room with chandeliers and white tablecloths.
The Escargot en Bouchee starter – imported French escargot, sauteed in a parsley butter, garlic and creamy cheese sauce – is nothing short of divine.

Pair it with a wine from the selection of about 40 labels. Many of LeStrada's recipes come from his Sicilian family. The Penne Emiliano features roasted chicken, artichokes, mushrooms and marinara sauce over penne. Lunch Monday-Friday; dinner Wednesday-Sunday.  Visit  Remy's on Grand

Hernandez Hideaway - 19320 Lake Dr., Escondido, CA 92029 Ph: (760) 746-1444
There's nothing fancy at this funky old roadhouse on the outer reaches of Escondido, just plenty of good filling Mexican entrees at easy-to-swallow prices. Margaritas are still the thing to drink, even though the hideaway has a full bar. And don't let the tangy-cool concoction fool you: Even if they're served blended, they're still potent and delicious.
